Subject: BIOSECURITY ALERT!

Poultry Producers:

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has been detected in a backyard flock in Caroline County.  Please practice strict biosecurity to protect your flock.  If you have any questions about biosecurity practices, please review the website https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ourfocus/animalhealth/animal-disease-information/avian/defend-the-flock-program/defend-the-flock-program 

 

With the beginning of fall migration season we can assume that Avian Influenza is present in the wild bird populations. Please be sure to limit your birds' access to wild birds by not allowing them to co-mingle or feed with your domestic birds. Utilize boot covers, foot baths, or change your shoes before entering your bird's enclosures. If you have any significant mortality or other AI symptoms please contact my office at 540-209-9120.  

 

At this time we do not have plans to restrict shipments, fairs/shows or other poultry events.  I will continue to send email updates should any regulations change. If you were located within a 10 mile radius of the index farm we would have contacted you to follow up.  If you have not received a phone call, you can assume you are not in the zone.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
